And Mavis Staples, one of the most enduring figures in American music, is laying it down. Sad And Beautiful World is the latest solo album from a national treasure and multigenerational talent. Produced by Brad Cook, Sad And Beautiful World spans seven decades of the American songbook - a range nearly as vast as Mavis' career - and includes reinventions of timeless songs by Tom Waits, Sparklehorse, Gillian Welch, Frank Ocean and more. Cook imagined an album in the tradition of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's Will the Circle Be Unbroken, a group of artists coming together to celebrate community - in this case, one centered on Mavis. Collaborators include Buddy Guy, Bonnie Raitt, Jeff Tweedy, Derek Trucks, Katie Crutchfield, MJ Lenderman, and Justin Vernon. Inducted into several halls of fame (Blues, Rock, and Gospel), a Kennedy Center Honoree, a winner of multiple GRAMMYs (including a Lifetime Achievement Award), Mavis is musical history. She's collaborated with nearly every major figure of her era(s), from Bob Dylan to Prince, Aretha Franklin, and Willie Nelson - not to mention countless stars from subsequent generations.

Tracklist

Side A

1. Chicago (2:37)

2. Beautiful Strangers (5:58)

3. Sad And Beautiful World (4:06)

4. Human Mind (3:12)

5. Hard Times (4:45)

Side B

1. Godspeed (2:51)

2. We Got To Have Peace (3:32)

3. Anthem (3:04)

4. Satisfied Mind (3:47)

5. Everybody Needs Love (4:24)

UPC: 045778807819
Label: Anti
Release Date: 11.7.25
Format: LP Vinyl

Details

Label: Anti- (88078-1MV, 88078-1) · Released: 2025 · Country: US

Tracklist

A1 Chicago – 2:37

A2 Beautiful Strangers – 5:58

A3 Sad And Beautiful World – 4:06

A4 Human Mind – 3:12

A5 Hard Times – 4:45

B1 Godspeed – 2:51

B2 We Got To Have Peace – 3:32

B3 Anthem – 3:04

B4 Satisfied Mind – 3:47

B5 Everybody Needs Love – 4:24

Credits

Brad Cook – Engineer

Paul Voran – Engineer

Brian Hernandez (5) – Engineer (Additional Engineering Assistance)

Jimmy Mahoney – Engineer (Additional Engineering Assistance)

Joel Jaffe – Engineer (Additional Engineering)

Jonathan Lackey – Engineer (Additional Engineering)

Justin Vernon – Engineer (Additional Engineering)

Mathieu Lejeune – Engineer (Additional Engineering)

Tom Schick – Engineer (Additional Engineering)

David Cheppa – Lacquer Cut By

Lauren N. Led by organist Art Neville, the quartet was rounded out by jazz-influenced guitarist Leo Nocentelli, along with the bubbling rhythm section of bassist George Porter, Jr. And drummer Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste. Their regional influences were a smashing together of rock n' roll, syncopated 'second line' rhythms from Mardi Gras parades, and jazz improvisations that only could have come from the New Orleans music scene. The Meters helped move R&B music toward the heavier direction of funk-complicated rhythms meeting economically powerful riffs that were the wave of what was to come.

Tracklist

Side A

1. Cissy Strut (3:00)

2. Here Comes The Meter Man (2:49)

3. Cardova (4:30)

4. Live Wire (2:35)

5. Art (2:30)

6. Sophisticated Cissy (2:50)

Side B

1. Ease Back (2:55)

2. 6V6 LA (2:20)

3. Sehorns Farm (2:20)

4. Ann (2:40)

5. Stormy (3:32)

6. Simple Song (2:56)

UPC: 843563191583
Label: Jackpot Records
Release Date: 9.5.25
Format: LP Vinyl

Details

Label: Warner Strategic Marketing United Kingdom (none) · Released: 2001 · Country: UK

Tracklist

1 Cissy Strut – 3:04

2 Here Comes The Meter Man – 2:54

3 Cardova – 4:32

4 Live Wire – 2:39

5 Art – 2:32

6 Sophisticated Cissy – 2:55

7 Ease Back – 3:13

8 6V6 LA – 2:24

9 Sehorn's Farm – 2:28

10 Ann – 2:44

11 Stormy – 3:37

12 Sing A Simple Song – 3:02

Bonus Tracks

13 The Look Of Love – 3:36

14 Soul Machine – 3:28

Released in 1973, Fresh arrived at a pivotal moment, when Sly Stone was simultaneously at the height of his commercial power and beginning a long, complicated withdrawal from the spotlight. Released the same year disco was reshaping the city's dancefloors, the album holds its ground as something more nuanced, a set that rewards both the crate digger and the careful listener equally.

In the digging world, is there a more solid musical catalog than that of Roy Ayers Ubiquity? The catalog starts strong with the iconic He's Coming and ends strong with the equally iconic Lifeline. There's no late seventies fizzle like other decade spanning artists, and everything in between seems to be a digger's staple. 1976's Vibrations is Ubiquity's penultimate record. What always impressed me about this particular album is the diversity of musical styles from track to track. I haven't listened to this in a couple years, and I'm taken back by it's unusual flow. Yeah, we all know about the Pete Rock-sampled "Searchin," but followed by the hard funk of "One Sweet Love To Remember"; the breezy title track (almost like a sequel to "Everybody Love's The Sunshine"); the spastic boogie of "Moving, Grooving"; to the hard midtempo drums of "Baby You Give Me A Feeling"... it becomes an inseparable part of the bigger picture. The funk sextet, with a unique leafy name to accompany their patented funk sound, created their latest project with the culinary arts very much at the forefront, signaling that music and food are intertwined. Much like following a recipe to create a meal, the right mixture of ingredients can make or break the sound of an album. After three decades together, the combo's current lineup—Adam Deitch (drums, percussion), Adam Smirnoff (guitar), Erick Coomes (bass), Ryan Zoidis (sax, synths), Eric Bloom (trumpet, horns) and Nigel Hall (vocals, clarinet, and keyboards)—dish a generous dose of flavorful offerings, drawing the listener to the table. With the studio as the kitchen, the album is a full-bodied tasting menu of funk, soul, jazz, rock and hip-hop. Cleverly divided into four parts, brief 30 to 40 second interludes titled Sesshins are offered as palette cleansers between courses. Each of the mini tracks prepare the listeners' ear for the new sounds to follow. Lettuce even plays around with serving different "cuisines," with the Middle-Eastern flavored 7 Tribes and the Latin-infused The Matador. Rising to the Top, originally recorded by musician Keni Burke, is a nod to the 80's R&B influences that shape the band's sound while The Mac is a spirited homage to famed sax player Maceo Parker, with whom the band has collaborated with in the past. Cool, laid back, but definitely funky, Cook brings the heat with the right recipe both musically and organizationally, and the result is a compilation of songs that woven together entice and enrich the listener's senses.

— Lauren Wiseman, Relix

Product Details

Lettuce has spent three decades building one of the tightest bands in the funk and soul underground, honing their chops from Boston's Berklee hallways to festival stages alongside the jam world's best. The genre-bending full-length album evokes neon and moonlight shimmering on ocean waves, undulating rhythms, martinis, and luxury convertibles. There's nothing lightweight about this collection, however. All the hallmark elements of Orgoneproduction-gritty, deep, authentic sounds and heavy beats-permeate this ten-song LP. For this album, Orgone pulled from it's deep bench of talent to feature vocal performances and co-writing by Adryon de León, Woolfy, Masauko Chipembere, Terin Ector, Jamie Allensworth, and more. Moonshadows is a heady mix of lush vocals, classic drum tones, and late-70s vibes best served chilled in the late-night hours and made to keep you grooving through your second wind and into the hazy sunrise.

UPC: 674862661770
Label: Colemine Records
Release Date: 7.23.21
Format: LP Vinyl

Tracklist

Side A

1. Calling On You

2. Concentration

3. Loveback

4. Get With It

5. Don't Stop

Side B

1. Hit & Run

2. Dreamer

3. Show Me

4. High And Low

5. Lost U

Details

Label: 3 Palm Records (TRP007LP-C1) · Released: 2021 · Country: US

Tracklist

A1 Calling On You

A2 Concentration

A3 Loveback

A4 Get With It

A5 Don't Stop

B1 Hit & Run

B2 Dreamer

B3 Show Me

B4 High And Low

B5 Lost U

The Philly Devotions operated in the same orbit as the O'Jays and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, working with the producers and session musicians who built the Sound of Philadelphia from the ground up. At long last, presented here are the complete singles that she recorded under her own name, newly remastered for this exclusive compilation, and pressed on limited edition color vinyl for your listening pleasure.

Tracklist:

Anniversary

Tow A Way Zone

I'm A Woman

Sweet Wine, Music And My Imagination

I Need You

Recycle

Gee Baby, What About You

I Need You(Instrumental)

UPC: 5061119460234
Label: Sonic Wax Records
Release Date: 9.4.26
Format: LP Vinyl

Details

Label: Creative Funk (12005) · Released: 1974 · Country: US

Tracklist

A I'm A Woman – 3:34

B Sweet Wine, Music, And My Imagination – 3:15

Credits

Bert Keyes – Arranged By, Producer (For Giant Enterprise)

Creative Funk Enterprise – Producer

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0998/4609/5166/files/Diane-Jenkins-Im-A-Woman-Complete-Singles-Colored-Limited-Edition-LP-Vinyl.jpg?v=1791135041
the-relatives-electric-word-lp-vinyl
The Relatives – Electric Word

Dallas gospel-soul collective The Relatives carry a lineage rooted in the church and shaped by decades of communal worship, and *Electric Word* finds them channeling that spiritual intensity through a raw, live-wire sound that owes as much to classic Southern soul as it does to the Holy Ghost. Translating the dusty, kung-fu-shadowed drama of Wu-Tang's Staten Island mythology into live instrumental soul was a genuine conceptual swing, and it landed. This Crimson Strike pressing gives collectors a chance to own one of the more imaginative hip-hop tribute records of its era in a format that does justice to its warm, analog heart.

Originally released in 2009 on Fat Beats Records, Enter the 37th Chamber transformed iconic Wu-Tang Clan songs into gritty, fully live instrumentals inspired by the cinematic production style of RZA. What began as an experimental tribute quickly became a worldwide cult classic embraced by DJs, record collectors, hip-hop fans, and members of Wu-Tang themselves.
