albert-ayler-love-cry-lp-vinyl
Albert Ayler – Love Cry

Recorded in 1968, the same year Ayler made the controversial leap to Impulse! and a more accessible sound, Love Cry captures him at a pivotal crossroads, still deep in the free tradition but reaching toward something more melodic and spectral. His tenor saxophone work here draws on New Orleans brass band roots and children's songs in ways that feel genuinely haunting rather than playful, a reminder that Ayler's avant-garde vision was always rooted in American vernacular music.

Limited 180gm vinyl LP pressing. 1968's Love Cry mixes Albert Ayler's free jazz with a catchy combination of nursery rhythms and brass band marches, resulting in a peak example of experimental jazz of the period. This was Ayler's last recording with his brother, Donald, who keeps the pace fiery along with the rhythm section of Alan Silva (bass), Milford Graves (drums), and Call Cobbs (harpsichord). The Verve By Request Series features 180-gram vinyl, pressed at Third Man in Detroit.

Tracklist

Side A

1. Love Cry (3:53)

2. Ghosts (2:46)

3. Omega (3:15)

4. Dancing Flowers (2:19)

5. Bells (3:08)

6. Love Flower (3:31)

Side B

1. Zion Hill (6:07)

2. Universal Indians (9:48)

UPC: 602455406644
Label: Verve
Release Date: 9.8.23
Format: LP Vinyl

Details

Label: Impulse!
