Hodges spent nearly his entire career in Ellington's band, and the chemistry between them here reflects decades of musical conversation compressed into a single afternoon of blues.

Duke Ellington/Johnny Hodges - "Back To Back (Verve Acoustic Sounds Series)" / Several times in his career, star alto-saxophone soloist Johnny Hodges struck out on his own, only to return each time to Duke Ellington's band. Critic Michael Ullman suggested that the blues classics chosen for this program may have been neutral ground, where Ellington's playing could come to the fore and Hodges' irrepressible sensuality could have free rein. This is one of the very best small-group records Ellington ever made - a perfectly integrated set of music that truly swings the blues. Verve Acoustic Sounds Series features transfers from analog tapes and remastered on 180g vinyl in deluxe gatefold packaging.

Tracklist

Side A

1. Wabash Blues

2. Basin Street Blues

3. Beale Street Blues

Side B

1. Weary Blues

2. St Louis Blues

3. Loveless Love

4. Royal Garden Blues

UPC: 602465124491
Label: Verve
Release Date: 5.24.24
Format: LP Vinyl

Details

Label: Jazz Wax Records (JWR 4528) · Released: 2010 · Country: Spain

Tracklist

A1 Wabash Blues – 6:31

A2 Basin Street Blues – 8:06

A3 Beale Street Blues – 7:39

A4 Villes Ville Is The Place, Man (Bonus Track) – 2:33

B1 Weary Blues – 6:59

B2 St Louis Blues – 5:51

B3 Loveless Love – 7:13

B4 Royal Garden Blues – 5:24

Credits

Johnny Hodges – Alto Saxophone

Harry Carney – Baritone Saxophone

Jimmy Woode – Bass

Sam Jones – Bass

Jo Jones – Drums

Sam Woodyard – Drums

Les Spann – Guitar

Duke Ellington – Piano

Britt Woodman – Trombone

John Sanders – Trombone

Quentin Jackson – Trombone

Harry Edison – Trumpet

Ray Nance – Trumpet
