Ward, this 2016 collection finds Mavis drawing on a hand-picked circle of admirers who clearly did their homework, tailoring songs to a voice that has carried everything from Civil Rights marches to Saturday night revival. The result is a songwriter summit that reads like a love letter to one of the last true originals in American music.

Mavis Staples has been a soul and gospel music legend for more than 50 years. Her work fronting the legendary Staples Singers defined the sound of politically-committed soul and influenced generations of musicians. As a solo artist in her own right she has helped to define much of what is righteous and soulful in American music. With Livin’ On A High Note, Mavis Staples has delivered the most joyful and uplifting record of her career. 12 original songs written exclusively for Mavis by some of the finest songwriters of our time including M .Ward, Ben Harper, Valerie June, Neko Case, tune-yards, Nick Cave, John Baptiste, Justin Vernon, Aloe Blacc, and more. At age 76, Mavis Staples shows no signs of slowing down and 2016 is slated to be one of her best years yet. On February 20th, HBO will debut Mavis! – the first feature length documentary on the gospel/soul music legend and civil rights icon.

Tracklist

Side A

1. Take Us Back

2. Love And Trust

3. If It's A Light

4. Action

5. High Note

6. Don't Cry

Side B

1. Tomorrow

2. Dedicated

3. History, Now

4. One Love

5. Jesus Lay Down Beside Me

6. MLK Song

UPC: 045778744411
Label: Anti
Release Date: 4.1.16
Format: LP Vinyl

Details

Label: Anti- (87444-1) · Released: 2016 · Country: US

Tracklist

A1 Take Us Back

A2 Love And Trust

A3 If It's A Light

A4 Action

A5 High Note

A6 Don't Cry

B1 Tomorrow

B2 Dedicated

B3 History, Now

B4 One Love

B5 Jesus Lay Down Beside Me

B6 MLK Song

Credits

Masaki Koike – Art Direction, Design

Chris Bellman – Lacquer Cut By

Adam Ayan – Mastered By

Tucker Martine – Mixed By

M.
