Paris gave her the distance to make something wholly her own, and the result is one of the most unguarded self-portraits in her catalog, written almost entirely in her own hand.

Recorded in 1982, not long after she moved to Paris, Fodder On My Wings was one of Nina Simone's favorite albums. In addition to having written the music and lyrics for all but one of the album's 13 songs, the back cover proudly states that she 'arranged, conducted and conceived' all of them. Originally recorded for a small French label and only sporadically available since its initial release, Fodder On My Wings is a lesserknown but important part of Nina's musical history. The album contains deeply personal songs, including 'I Sing Just To Know That I'm Alive' and 'I Was Just A Stupid Dog To Them', as well a searing lyrical improvisation about the death of her father on 'Alone Again, Naturally'. Recorded at a time when Nina was feeling rejuvenated by her surroundings and the African musicians she met in Paris, Fodder On My Wings is an essential Nina Simone album that is making a longoverdue reappearance.

Tracklist

Side A

1. I Sing Just To Know That I'm Alive (2:21)

2. Fodder In Her Wings (5:32)

3. Vous Etes Seuls, Mais Je Désire Etre Avec Vous (4:27)

4. Il Y A Un Baume A Gilhead (2:19)

5. Liberian Calypso (2:57)

6. Alone Again Naturally (6:24)

Side B

1. I Was Just A Stupid Dog To Them (2:23)

2. Color Is A Beautiful Thing (1:01)

3. Le Peuple En Suisse (4:56)

4. Heaven Belongs To You (3:36)

5. Thandewye (5:29)

6. Stop (2:17)

7. They Took My Hand (0:33)

UPC: 602508265334
Label: Verve
Release Date: 4.3.20
Format: LP Vinyl

Details

Label: Verve Records (00602508265334); UMe (00602508265334) · Released: 2020 · Country: Europe

Tracklist

A1 I Sing Just To Know That I'm Alive – 2:21

A2 Fodder In Her Wings – 5:32

A3 Vous Etes Seuls, Mais Je Désire Etre Avec Vous – 4:27

A4 Il Y A Un Baume A Gilhead – 2:19

A5 Liberian Calypso – 2:57

A6 Alone Again Naturally – 6:24

B1 I Was Just A Stupid Dog To Them – 2:23

B2 Color Is A Beautiful Thing – 1:01

B3 Le Peuple En Suisse – 4:56

B4 Heaven Belongs To You – 3:36

B5 Thandewye – 5:29

B6 Stop – 2:17

B7 They Took My Hand – 0:33

Credits

Nina Simone – Arranged By, Conductor, Written By (Conceived By), Lyrics By (English & French), Piano, Vocals, Harpsichord, Shaker, Tambourine, Backing Vocals (Harmony)

Sydney Thiam – Congas, Bells, Wood Block

Stanley Chow – Cover, Illustration

Sylvin Marc – Electric Bass, Vocals

Daniel Abraham – Engineer

Paco Sery – Percussion, Timpani (Tympani)

Giancarlo Cerri – Producer

Yves Chamberland – Producer
