Her interpretation of the title track strips away Screamin' Jay Hawkins' voodoo theatrics and replaces them with something more unsettling: genuine, controlled intensity. That tension between beauty and fury is what defines her entire catalog, and it's never more present than here.

Vinyl LP pressing. I Put a Spell on You is the 1965 album by Nina Simone, and features some of her best known songs. "I Put a Spell on You" is a song originally by Screamin' Jay Hawkins. The original version gave the song an ironic theme, but Simone transformed it into a thrilling love song, complete with horns and strings. It had become one of her most well-known songs. Nina Simone was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and civil rights activist who worked in a broad range of musical styles including classical, jazz, blues, folk, R&B, gospel, and pop. Simone's musical style fused gospel and pop with classical music, in particular Johann Sebastian Bach, and accompanied expressive, jazz-like singing in her contralto voice.

Tracklist

Side A

1. I Put A Spell On You (2:33)

2. Tomorrow Is My Turn (2:43)

3. Ne Me Quitte Pas (3:27)

4. Marriage Is For Old Folks (3:22)

5. July Tree (2:40)

6. Gimme Some (2:58)

Side B

1. Feeling Good (2:52)

2. One September Day (2:47)

3. Blues On Purpose (3:18)

4. Beautiful Land (1:55)

5. You've Got To Learn (2:40)

6. Take Care Of Business (2:04)

UPC: 600753605707
Label: Verve
Release Date: 9.30.16
Format: LP Vinyl

Details

Label: Philips (PHS 600-172, 0600753605707) · Released: 2016 · Country: Europe

Tracklist

A1 I Put A Spell On You – 2:33

A2 Tomorrow Is My Turn – 2:43

A3 Ne Me Quitte Pas – 3:27

A4 Marriage Is For Old Folks – 3:22

A5 July Tree – 2:40

A6 Gimme Some – 2:58

B1 Feeling Good – 2:52

B2 One September Day – 2:47

B3 Blues On Purpose – 3:18

B4 Beautiful Land – 1:55

B5 You've Got To Learn – 2:40

B6 Take Care Of Business – 2:04

Credits

Roger Short – Liner Notes

Bernard Gotfryd – Photography By (Cover Photo)

Hal Mooney – Producer
