roland-kirk-we-free-kings-lp-vinyl
Roland Kirk – We Free Kings

Roland Kirk was playing three saxophones simultaneously before most people knew it was possible, and We Free Kings arrived at a moment when he was still proving himself to a jazz world that hadn't quite caught up to what he was doing. The album's title track became one of his most enduring statements, a reminder that Kirk's compositional voice was as singular as his instrumental approach.

Known as a then-young Kirk's more consistent works, 1962's We Free Kings is a solid balance of bop with complimenting soul, backed by two different rhythm sections - one including Hank Jones (piano) and Wendell Marshall (bass), and the other with Richard Wyands (piano) and Art Davis (bass) - while Charlie Persip (drums) maintains throughout. The repertoire is primarily a showcase of Kirk's skill as a composer, though his take on Bird's "Blues For Alice" is not to be missed. Verve Acoustic Sounds Series features transfers from analog tapes and remastered 180-gram vinyl in deluxe gatefold packaging.

Tracklist

Side A

1. Three For The Festival (3:05)

2. Moon Song (4:17)

3. A Sack Full Of Soul (4:35)

4. The Haunted Melody (3:36)

5. Blues For Alice (4:04)

Side B

1. We Free Kings (4:45)

2. You Did It, You Did It (2:24)

3. Some Kind Of Love (6:06)

4. My Delight (4:26)

UPC: 602475813002
Label: Verve
Release Date: 6.13.25
Format: LP Vinyl

Details

Label: Mercury (SR 60679) · Released: 2013 · Country: Italy

Tracklist

A1 Three For The Festival – 3:05

A2 Moon Song – 4:17

A3 A Sack Full Of Soul – 4:35

A4 The Haunted Melody – 3:36

A5 Blues For Alice – 4:04

B1 We Free Kings – 4:45

B2 You Did It, You Did It – 2:24

B3 Some Kind Of Love – 6:06

B4 My Delight – 4:26

Credits

Art Davis – Bass

Wendell Marshall – Bass

Charlie Persip – Drums

Tommy Nola – Engineer

Martin Williams (6) – Liner Notes

Hank Jones – Piano

Richard Wyands – Piano

Jack Tracy – Recording Supervisor

Roland Kirk – Tenor Saxophone, Other (Manzello), Other (Stritch), Flute
