Getz, whose cool tone could sometimes be mistaken for restraint, rises to meet Peterson's relentless swing, and the result is a saxophonist playing with a directness and authority that casual fans of his bossa nova work might not expect.

Stan Getz and the Oscar Peterson Trio, released in 1958 on Verve Records, documents a rare meeting between two contrasting but complementary jazz greats: the cool-toned tenor saxophonist Stan Getz and the hard-driving Oscar Peterson Trio. Produced by Norman Granz and recorded in Hollywood in October 1957, the session finds Getz joining a veteran rhythm section already regarded as one of the most cohesive in jazz: Peterson on piano, Herb Ellis on guitar, and Ray Brown on bass. While Getz was often heard in more subdued or orchestrated contexts during this period, this session highlights his command of bebop language and small-group swing. Peterson's trio, known for it's drive and responsiveness, adapts fluidly to Getz's tone and phrasing, yielding a session marked by relaxed interplay, rhythmic clarity, and understated virtuosity. The Verve Vault series is always mastered from analog tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.

Tracklist

Side A

1. I Want To Be Happy

2. Pennies From Heaven

3. Ballad Medley

Side B

1. I'm Glad There's You

2. Tour's End

3. I Was Doing All Right

4. Bronx Blues

UPC: 602478984853
Label: Verve
Release Date: 2.13.26
Format: LP Vinyl

Details

Label: Verve Records (MG V-8348) · Released: 1959 · Country: US

Tracklist

A1 Scrapple From The Apple

A2 I Didn't Know What Time It Was

B1 Three Little Words

B2 Detour Ahead

B3 Sunday

B4 Blues For Herky

Credits

Sheldon Marks – Art Direction

Gerry Mulligan – Baritone Saxophone

Ray Brown – Bass

Stan Levey – Drums

Herb Ellis – Guitar

Nat Hentoff – Liner Notes

Ken Veeder – Photography

Phil Stern – Photography

Lou Levy – Piano

Oscar Peterson – Piano

Stan Getz – Tenor Saxophone

https://reserveselects.myshopify.com/products/stan-getz-the-oscar-peterson-trio-stan-getz-and-the-oscar-peterson-trio-lp-vinyl
