Herman Poole Blount, who rechristened himself Sun Ra and claimed Saturn as his birthplace, built a decades-long live tradition around the Arkestra's theatrical, all-encompassing performances, and that spirit of communal transcendence is exactly what this music demands to be heard on.

Vinyl LP pressing. Space Is The Place - highlighted by the rousing 21-minute title track - is both an essential album and a great onramp for new listeners to travel the spaceways of Sun Ra's other-worldly blend of avant-garde jazz, experimental rock, and Afrofuturism. The Verve By Request Series features 180-gram vinyl, pressed at Third Man in Detroit.

Tracklist

Disc 1

1. Space Is The Place (21:14)

Side B

1. Images (6:15)

2. Discipline 33 (4:50)

3. Sea Of Sounds (7:42)

4. Rocket Number Nine (2:59)

UPC: 602455406729
Label: Verve
Release Date: 9.8.23
Format: LP Vinyl

Details

Label: Blue Thumb Records (BTS 41) · Released: 1973 · Country: US

Tracklist

A Space Is The Place – 21:14

B1 Images – 6:15

B2 Discipline 33 – 4:50

B3 Sea Of Sound – 7:42

B4 Rocket Number Nine – 2:50

Credits

Larry Northington – Alto Saxophone

Danny Davis – Alto Saxophone, Flute

Marshall Allen – Alto Saxophone, Flute

Sun Ra – Arranged By

Pat Patrick – Baritone Saxophone, Bass

Danny Ray Thompson – Baritone Saxophone, Flute

Eloe Omoe – Bass Clarinet

Sun Ra – Composed By

Alzo Wright – Drums

Harry Richards – Drums

Robert Underwood – Drums

Baker Bigsby – Engineer

Lex Humphries – Percussion

Russell Branch – Percussion, Congas

Stanley Morgan – Percussion, Congas

Sun Ra – Piano, Organ (Space), Synthesizer (Moog)

Alton Abraham – Producer

Ed Michel – Producer

John Gilmore – Tenor Saxophone, Drums, Vocals

Akh Tal Ebah – Trumpet, Flugelhorn (Fuglehorn), Vocals

Lamont McClamb – Trumpet, Percussion

Cheryl Banks – Vocals (Space Ethnic)

Judith Holton – Vocals (Space Ethnic)

June Tyson – Vocals (Space Ethnic)

Ruth Wright – Vocals (Space Ethnic)
