Recorded in 1956, Tenorman gave James Clay his first real spotlight, and Sonny Clark's presence on piano ties this session directly to the Blue Note hard bop lineage he'd help define on his own classic dates.

The Lawrence Marable Quartet Tenorman Blue Note Tone Poet Edition (LP) A West Coast jazz date that blows with hard bop gusto, Tenorman by the Lawrence Marable Quartet featuring James Clay was a hard-swinging session led by the esteemed drummer (Marable) that served as an introduction of the young Texan tenor (Clay) with support from pianist Sonny Clark and bassist Jimmy Bond. This mono Blue Note Tone Poet Edition was produced by Joe Harley, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analog master tapes, pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI, and packaged in a deluxe tip-on jacket.

Tracklist

Side A

1. The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea (4:37)

2. Easy Living (4:30)

3. Minor Meeting (4:00)

4. Air Tight (3:40)

Side B

1. Willow Weep For Me (4:45)

2. Three Fingers North (4:28)

3. Lover Man (4:12)

4. Marbles (4:18)

UPC: 602458422788
Label: Blue Note Records
Release Date: 3.6.26
Format: LP Vinyl

Details

Label: Jazz: West (602458422788, JWLP-8, JWLP: 8) · Released: 2026 · Country: Worldwide

Tracklist

A1 The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea – 4:37

A2 Easy Living – 4:30

A3 Minor Meeting – 4:00

A4 Air Tight – 3:40

B1 Willow Weep For Me – 4:45

B2 Three Fingers North – 4:28

B3 Lover Man – 4:12

B4 Marbles – 4:18

Credits

Jimmy Bond – Bass

Lawrence Marable – Drums

John Kraus – Engineer

Kevin Gray – Lacquer Cut By

Herbert Kimmel – Liner Notes

Syd Schwartz – Liner Notes (Reel To Real: Syncopated Rewind)

Kevin Gray – Mastered By (LP Mastering By)

William Claxton – Photography By (Photographs Taken By)

Sonny Clark – Piano

Herbert Kimmel – Supervised By

Joe Harley – Supervised By (LP Supervision By)

James Clay – Tenor Saxophone (Tenor)
