thelonious-monk-classic-quartet-lp-vinyl
Thelonious Monk – Classic Quartet

Monk's 1963 Japan tour came at a pivotal moment, just as his classic quartet with Charlie Rouse on tenor saxophone was hitting its stride as one of the most intuitive working bands in jazz. Rouse spent over a decade alongside Monk, developing a rare shorthand with the pianist's angular compositions and unpredictable phrasing that few musicians ever managed to crack. Hearing them in a television performance context adds an intimacy that studio sessions rarely capture.

This recording is the audio portion of a television show recorded in Tokyo during Monk's 1963 tour of Japan. Not to be confused with the live album of that same 1963 tour, Monk In Tokyo, released on Columbia Records. It also should be noted that the recordings here were previously released as Thelonious Monk 1963 Japan, at various times, by various labels. This version has been remastered by Award Winning Engineer Bernie Grundman. It is the first time this album has been released on vinyl in over 35 years.

Tracklist

Side A

1. Epistrophy

2. Ba-Lou Bolivar Ba-Lues-Are

3. Evidence

Side B

1. Just A Gigolo

2. Blue Monk

UPC: 708857355112
Label: Candid
Release Date: 6.2.23
Format: LP Vinyl

Details

Label: Candid (CLP 36511, 36511, 708857365111) · Released: 2022 · Country: Worldwide

Tracklist

A1 Epistrophy

A2 Ba-Lou Bolivar Ba-Lues-Are

A3 Evidence

B1 Just A Gigolo

B2 Blue Monk

Credits

Butch Warren – Bass

Frankie Dunlop – Drums

Bernie Grundman – Lacquer Cut By

Scott Yanow – Liner Notes

Kuniya Inaoka – Photography By

Thelonious Monk – Piano

TBS Engineer Group – Recorded By

Bernie Grundman – Remastered By

Kiyoshi Iwami – Restoration (Enhanced From Videotape)

Charlie Rouse – Tenor Saxophone
